LARGE PRICE REDUCTION!!
Rare
opportunity to purchase an architecturally significant mid-century
modern home in the Philadelphia area in restored condition. This home
designed by Frank Weise in 1951 is an early steel frame home. The steel
support gives the home the appearance of a floating second floor
resting gently upon the glass corners of the lower floor. Frank Weise,
a student of Walter Gropius at Harvard, designed the most unique,
cutting edge, mid-century modern homes in the Philadelphia area. This
home was built for Frank's brother Bernard. The home has an open floor plan with a surround of glass walls
and delicate support structure further enlarging the feel of the
spacious rooms. The structure and all systems of the home have recently
been carefully restored to their former glory For more information on
Frank Weise.

2+ acres
2374 sq ft
The Sheppard Residence designed by Frank Weise in 1950 is one of the finest examples if mid-century modern architecture. When in this home there is a feeling of floating in the trees, overlooking the 2+ acre property. It is a similar feeling with the renowned Farnsworth house outside of Chicago by Miese van der Rohe, and the Glass house by Philip Johnson in New Cannan. The Sheppard Residence was completed in 1950 one year after the Glass house and one year prior to the Farnesworth. This home by Weise is significant in the progession of great mid-century modern architecture of the US.
The unique design makes incredibly efficient use of the interior space, giving it the feel of a large modern home of the period. The upstairs has the expansive living room/ dining room, entry area, 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a bonus space. Downstairs there is a family room, bath, office and additional work/storage space.
The steel frame home has many wonderful architectural details such as the floating ceilings, corner glass, entry area detail, and beautiful stonework. Each of the 4 bedrooms and the main hall have incredible original built in cabinets. The home is well situated on the 2+ acres given much privacy and a wonderful view down to the stream. The home is on the market for the first time and has all original details preserved, even the original colors on the kitchen cabinets and exterior.
PENDING
As described by Arthur Tofani in his presentation to the D'Onofrio's
in 1958 " powerful, curving walls of local stone, deeply rooted to the
earth, carrying a wing like roof whose form, the result of long study
of developed forces, permits support at almost any point. Under this
crisply graceful shelter, spaces could be disposed freely. Gone is the
constricting formality of the recent past. Space becomes more an
exciting entity that is allowed to exist purely for the pleasure of
experiencing it."
The incredible curving roof of this home is a true one of a kind.
It draws your eye out in every direction and it truly feels as if is
just floating above. The design and fine craftsmanship have resulted in
a very low maintenance roof for the current owners to a level rarely
seen in homes of this period. Light was a careful consideration in
design with morning southeastern light for the bedrooms. All major
rooms of the home have full southern exposure. The setting southwestern
sun can be seen from the living and dining room area.
