N. William Winkelman Residence   1958

This is an incredible home built on the edge of Fairmont Park.  It has one of the most dramatic living spaces I have seen.  The home has a grand entertaining portion and a wing with 7 bedrooms.  There is a feeling of gently floating in the treetops from the home. This home is built on the site Louis Kahn had designed a home 1947-1949  Alterations and a garage were commissioned in 1963 though the garage was never built

Jules Gregory

partnership with William Hunt from 1949

personal home ca.1960  Jules Gregory

From the Architectural Record of 1961
"This fanciful house achieves quite an air of distinction from its eye-catching double conoid roof.  The double conoid roof is formed by two identical laminated wood beams on either of the long walls of the building.  One is used upside down in relation to the other.  ( A peak on one side is a valley on the other.)  A straight laminated beam is at the center.  The roof deck is made of white fir (2by 3's)  The roof is free standing, supported by wood posts.    Full expression of the roof shape is emphasized by running all partitions only to a height of 7 ft, and keeping all of them non-bearing.  Acoustic privacy is achieved by sheets of glass spanning the partition tops to the roof.  Stone walls give bracing and texture to the stucco and glass panels."

"Buiding cost about 30,000 in 1960"

Harry Sternfeld (1888-1976)

Harry Sternfeld a Philadelphia native, received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. He became head of architecture at Carnegie-Mellon University and later joined the Faculty at Penn. Like his student Louis Kahn, Sternfeld was, in his early years, strongly influenced by developments in France and, in particular, the Beaux-arts approach.

Sternfeld's evolution as a modern architect began in the early 1930's when he started to incorporate aspects of Art Deco into his design vocabulary. The U.S. Post office and Court House at 9th and Market Streets(below right) in Center City Philadelphia and his WCAU building at 1618 Chestnut Street(below left) are notable examples nationally.  Continuing his practice into the 1950's, Sternfeld designed th Germantown Jewish Center (large photograph below) built between 1950 and 1954.

Lawrence House(1954-55)
This mid-century modern designed by Sternfeld  has details not seen in other modern homes of the period, and has the substantial feel of his more public work. This dramatic home was placed far back on the site facing the approach to take full advantage of the south facing light.

This home was designed by Sternfeld in 1936, note some of the Art Deco details
