Modern Residential Architecture Philadelphia
Louis Kahn designed some of the area's earliest mid-century homes, starting with the Oser house in 1942. Other well known Kahn homes include the Esherick House in Chestnut Hill, the Fisher House in Hatboro, and the Genel House on the Main Line. Kahn's homes are all very unique in their design. Material was very important to Louis Kahn, and his Philadelphia modernist homes all included detailed woodwork and local stone.
Frank Lloyd Wright built the Usonian Suntop Houses in Ardmore which have a very characteristic Wright look. Many architects who studied under Frank LLoyd Wright also designed homes in the Philadelphia area. Frank Weiss was based locally, and Richard Neutra designed several great mid-century homes around Philadelphia.
