LET CRAIG WAKEFIELD HELP YOU SELL OR PURCHASE

 A MODERN HOME

Thank you to all of you watching this site and choosing to work with me this year. I very much appreciate the continuing referrals so many of you send my way.

I am thankful to receive your vote of confidence in the 2010 and again in 2011 Philadelphia Magazine survey of recent home buyers and industry experts placing
me among the very highest scoring agents in customer satisfaction in the
Philadelphia region.

Marketing and selling modern architecturally significant homes is a highly specialized area of real estate.  My main objective is to help those who see the value in architecture.  This website gets thousands of hits a month from people seeking unique modern and mid-century  modern homes.  I work primarily in the five counties based around Philadelphia, but I have set up a network of other modern specialists throughout the country.  Please also feel free to contact Craig if your are outside the Philadelphia region so that I can connect you with the modern specialist in your area.

Currently there is a number of significant mid-century and modern properties on the market, including some by well known architects who designed homes in the area. Two of Louis Kahn's award winning homes are available. There is a fantastic Montgomery and Bishop home close to center city on 3 acres.  An incredible renovated steel frame home by Frank Weise among many others listed below.   I have researched the modern and mid-century homes available in center city Philadelphia and the surrounding counties and would be glad to work with you to help you purchase a great modern home.

Please call Craig Wakefield at 267-973-9567 for listing details on the many listings below.

The Sheppard Residence by Frank Weise
http://www.philadelphiamid-century.com/
Meadowbrook PA
2+ acres
2374 sq ft
The Sheppard Residence designed by Frank Weise in 1950 is one of the finest examples if mid-century modern architecture.  When in this home there is a feeling of floating in the trees, overlooking the 2+ acre property.  It is a similar feeling with the renowned Farnsworth house outside of Chicago by Miese van der Rohe, and the Glass house by Philip Johnson in New Cannan.  The Sheppard Residence was completed in 1950 one year after the Glass house and one year prior to the Farnesworth.  This home by Weise is significant in the progession of great mid-century modern architecture of the US.
The unique design makes incredibly efficient use of the interior space, giving it the feel of a large modern home of the period.  The upstairs has the expansive living room/ dining room, entry area, 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a bonus space. Downstairs there is a family room, bath, office and additional work/storage space.
The steel frame home has many wonderful architectural details such as the floating ceilings, corner glass, entry area detail, and beautiful stonework.  Each of the 4 bedrooms and the main hall have incredible original built in cabinets. The home is well situated on the 2+ acres given much privacy and a wonderful view down to the stream. The home is on the market for the first time and has all original details preserved, even the original colors on the kitchen cabinets and exterior.

Sold Summer 2010

As described by Arthur Tofani in his presentation to the D'Onofrio's in 1958 " powerful, curving walls of local stone, deeply rooted to the earth, carrying a wing like roof whose form, the result of long study of developed forces, permits support at almost any point. Under this crisply graceful shelter, spaces could be disposed freely. Gone is the constricting formality of the recent past. Space becomes more an exciting entity that is allowed to exist purely for the pleasure of experiencing it."

The incredible curving roof of this home is a true one of a kind.  It draws your eye out in every direction and it truly feels as if is just floating above. The design and fine craftsmanship have resulted in a very low maintenance roof for the current owners to a level rarely seen in homes of this period. Light was a careful consideration in design with morning southeastern light for the bedrooms.  All major rooms of the home have full southern exposure. The setting southwestern sun can be seen from the living and dining room area.
