Oscar Stonorov ( 1905-1970)
Born
in Germany/ University of Florence 1924/ University of Zurich
1925-1928/ apprenticed with French Sculptor Aristide Maillol/ worked in
Paris in office of Andre Lurcat 1928/ emigrated to U.S. 1929 bringing the influence of the Bauhaus and International Style
Throughout
his career he worked with a number of Philadelphia architects Alfred
Kastner/ Louis Kahn / George Howe / and Frank Haws for 15 years
starting in 1957

Avon Lea 1938
Oscar
Stonorov's personal residence built in 1938. The stone walls of an
existing stone and frame farmhouse were used as the core of the
structure. Exterior wood was cypress/ Roofs were flat/ the studio is
connected to the main house by the bridge

Designed
by Oskar Stonorov in the International Style, this house is sited below
street level, and approached down a long, sloping drive to an arrival
court bounded by the one-story carport and kitchen on the right and
the two-story main living wing of the house on the left. One moves diagonally
from the entry through the open plan to an enclosed pool court beyond.
Jumbo brick and large roof overhangs in the east/west direction bring
stature and directionality to the massing.

This
house, designed by Oskar Stonorov, is sited
on a slope at the periphery of the Cherokee Village apartment complex.
It emerges from the ground in a series of increasingly open pavilions
whose flat roofs float above bands of clerestory windows, creating a
light, suspended feeling. The building is anchored by a central brick
pavilion (housing service functions) that separates the garage on the
left from the entrance on the right. The two-story living area, clad
in white panels, steps up and down, culminating at the rear in an open
pool terrace that looks deep into the woods below.

Builder for this first home was Meyer Soifer for his family. Soifer was a builder in the area.
